About Symphony

The Symphony OS Project began in 2005 as an experiment in web technologies in the desktop space with a focus on usability. Our GNU/Linux distribution, designed to run on less than new hardware included new technologies like the Orchestra Application Environment, a local web server designed to bring web technologies into the desktop space, and the innovative Mezzo Desktop which focused on usability.

Today, local webservers running web apps are everywhere. New devices bring new interfaces and usability take leaps and bounds as we find new ways to interact with information. Symphony Strata is a project that aims to unify the way we interact with our information and contacts. Strata will be a distributed environment allowing people to store and work with their files, listen to their music and watch their videos in as seamless a way as possible whether on their desktop, a laptop, a tablet, or even a phone. The Symphony OS project aims to create this operating environment. We are creating a web technologies based desktop environment, viewable on all your devices and capible of running not only web applications but also local and remote X11 applications, and eventually remote Windows and OS X applications.

We are currently working toward our first Symphony Strata alpha release. Currently we have a web based desktop environment accessible from any modern web browser which can run web apps as well as running X11 application via a VNC server and html5 interface.
